Ciénaga de Zapata – Playa Larga, Playa Girón and the Bay of Pigs

Discover one of Cuba’s most beautiful natural areas, where tropical birds, mangrove forests, and a beautiful underwater world converge.

Ciénaga de Zapata is located in the province of Matanzas, on the south coast of Cuba. This vast nature reserve is a special destination for travelers who like to go off the beaten track.

Here you will not find crowded resorts, but small villages, casas particulares, quiet beaches and plenty of opportunities to discover nature.

What can you do in Ciénaga de Zapata?

Playa Larga

Playa Larga is located on the Bay of Pigs (Bahía de Cochinos) and is a great base to explore the area.

You can relax by the sea, snorkel, dive or go out into nature with a local guide. In the village there are several casas particulares where you can stay with Cuban families.

Playa Girón

Playa Girón is best known for the historical events surrounding the invasion of the Bay of Pigs in 1961.

Nature lovers will also find plenty to enjoy here, with crystal-clear waters and beautiful spots for snorkeling and diving.

Snorkeling and diving

The Bay of Pigs is a popular destination for snorkeling and diving in Cuba, with coral reefs located close to the shore.

Well-known places are Punta Perdiz, Caleta Buena and the Cueva de los Peces, a deep natural waterhole with clear water.

Bird watching and nature walks

Ciénaga de Zapata is a paradise for bird lovers. The wetlands and forests are home to a remarkable variety of birds, including several species found nowhere else in the world.

With a local naturalist guide, you can go bird-watching, discover the mangrove areas, and learn more about the flora and fauna.

Laguna del Tesoro in Guamá

At Guamá you can discover the wetlands of the region. Laguna del Tesoro is known for its natural environment and the recreated Taíno settlement, which gives an impression of the original inhabitants of Cuba.

How long should you stay?

I recommend staying at least three nights in Playa Larga or Playa Girón. This will give you enough time to discover nature, beaches and underwater world.

For enthusiastic birdwatchers, divers and nature lovers, four or five nights are definitely worth it.

Staying in a casa particular

Staying in a casa particular is a great way to experience Cuban hospitality and at the same time support the locals directly.

I can help you find suitable accommodation, depending on your wishes and current availability.
