Tropical rainforests, impressive mountains, beautiful rivers and deserted beaches. Baracoa lets you discover a completely different side of Cuba.
Baracoa was one of the first places that made me fall in love with Cuba. This special city was founded in 1511 and is known as the oldest Spanish settlement in Cuba.
Baracoa is surrounded by green mountains, rivers and tropical forests. Due to its remote location, this region has retained a very unique character.
For travelers who love nature, adventure, culture, and authentic Cuban life, Baracoa is a beautiful destination.

What can you do in Baracoa?
El Yunque – The symbol of Baracoa
The striking, flattened mountain El Yunque is the landmark of Baracoa.
For active travelers, a hike to the top is a special experience. Along the way, you will discover tropical vegetation, special birds and beautiful views.
The hike is quite strenuous and preferably done with a local guide. Depending on the conditions, you can also cross the river along the way.
Parque Nacional Alejandro de Humboldt
This national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional biodiversity.
The park is home to an extraordinary variety of plants and animals, including species found in very few other places in the world.
With a local nature guide, you can explore the rainforest and enjoy special hiking trails, rivers, and waterfalls.
Playa Maguana
Do you want to spend a day relaxing by the sea? Then Playa Maguana is a great choice.
This beach is located outside the city, surrounded by tropical vegetation. It is a wonderful place to enjoy nature and the Caribbean atmosphere.
Río Toa and Río Duaba
The Baracoa region is known for its beautiful rivers, particularly the Río Toa and Río Duaba.
Here you can enjoy green landscapes, traditional agricultural areas and, where possible, a boat trip or a refreshing swim.

Cañón del Río Yumurí
Another special excursion is a visit to the gorge of the Río Yumurí.
Here you can take a boat trip through the gorge, go hiking and enjoy the spectacular scenery.
Cocoa and chocolate from Baracoa
Baracoa is famous for its cocoa and coconut products.
During a visit to a local cocoa plantation, you can discover how cocoa is grown and processed.
Be sure to taste the local specialties, such as Cucurucho, a sweet treat based on coconut that is traditionally wrapped in palm leaves.
How long do you want to stay in Baracoa?
I recommend staying in Baracoa for at least three nights.
The region is far from the most famous tourist destinations and has a lot to offer. A stay of four or five nights is definitely worth it if you want to go for extensive hiking and discover nature.
Staying in a casa particular
In Baracoa you can stay in cozy casas particulares, where you can experience Cuban hospitality up close.
By choosing a local accommodation, you are directly supporting Cuban families.
I am happy to help you find suitable accommodation that meets your needs.
How to get to Baracoa?
Baracoa is accessible by road from Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo, via the famous La Farola mountain route.
This spectacular road winds through the mountain landscape and offers beautiful views.
Keep in mind that traveling to eastern Cuba requires more preparation. Due to fuel shortages, weather conditions and changes in the transport situation, it is wise to organize transport in advance.
Combine Baracoa with Santiago de Cuba and Holguín
Baracoa is a wonderful addition to a tour of eastern Cuba.
For example, you can visit Santiago de Cuba, then travel on to Baracoa and then discover the surroundings of Holguín.
The best route depends on your available time, interests, and current transportation options.

Discover Baracoa with local people
I live in Cuba myself and help travelers put together personal tours, with a focus on small-scale tourism and the local population.
Whether you want to go hiking, bird watching, visit a cocoa plantation or just want to enjoy a few days in this special environment: I will be happy to help you find suitable accommodation, transport and excursions.
